Three Nights to Honor Seniors | By Roxanne McKnight
Seniors in area nursing homes were honored on three separate nights, December 18, 20 and 21, by JAM Ministries Christian Church in San Antonio. The elders were brought in limousines to the church at 1000 Cincinnati Avenue, where they were served coffee, hot chocolate, eggnog and doughnuts. On the first and third nights of the event, singers from the church entertained the guests. On the second night, Jimmy Edward, a Grammy-nominated Tejano legend who now sings Christian music, delighted the audience.
Robert Morgan, the pastor of JAM Ministries, coordinated the event, with in-kind donations from Starbucks, Borden’s, Krispy Kreme and A-VIP Limousine Service. Morgan, who founded JAM Ministries in July, credits Jeff Williams, who owns the limousine service, with creating the idea of honoring the seniors.
“This was Jeff William's idea; we just supported the program. Jeff asked me if we would be a part of serving the seniors. He said, ‘During this season they feel lonely. We need to make them feel needed and special.’”
The 72 men and women who were honored at the event represented Normandy Terrace, Southeast, River City and other nursing homes. Many needed help walking, but most smiled and appeared to appreciate the attention.
“I was uncomfortable in the truck (limousine),” said Moses Williams, 88, as he sat on a folding chair waiting for the music to start Monday night, “but everything is nice. I’m enjoying myself.”
